Warrior Band Selected to Perform at National Band Championship

USBands, one of the two major national band circuits in the country, has selected East Stroudsburg University's Warrior Band to be the Exhibition Performers for the USBands Class A National Championship to be held Saturday, November 2 at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pa.

Graduate Students Reflect on Time in Classroom Abroad

For one week in July, three East Stroudsburg University graduate students along with their professor worked in Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, a private k-12 school in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The hands-on experience abroad fulfilled the requirements for a course in comparative education. Rebecca Carbin of Stroudsburg, Pa., Danielle Cloward of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Migdalia Lira of Easton, Pa. were led on the study abroad experience by Beth Rajan Sockman, Ph.D., professor of professional and secondary education and co-department chair. Through a range of new experiences, the students immersed themselves in the Guatemalan culture in order to have the opportunity to reflect on their own culture and education system.

Three New Board Members Named to ESU Foundation

Robert Willever '75, East Stroudsburg University Foundation Board Chair, has announced the appointments of three new members to its Board of Directors. ESU alumni Alfredo Garcia '03 of Bethlehem, Pa., local businessman Stephen Somers of Hackettstown, N.J., and student liaison Emily Jimenez '22, were appointed during the board's quarterly meeting held on May 13, 2019.

ESU Students Attend National Education for Women's Leadership Conference

Two East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania students were selected to attend a program which seeks to help prepare and empower young women to be future leaders in the political process. The students attended the National Education for Women's (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania institute at the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University in Pittsburgh from June 3-7. The NEW Leadership program is a six-day, concentrated curriculum for female students attending colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania. Participants learned about networking, public speaking, the need for women's leadership in the political process and participated in skills-building workshops.

Spring 2019 Dean's List Announced

A total of 1,520 students have been named to the Dean's List at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) for the Spring 2019 semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, according to Joanne Bruno, J.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. Students eligible for the Dean's List are those who have attained a 3.50 quality point average or better and are enrolled full-time. The letter grade "B" earns 3 quality points per credit, and the grade "A" earns 4 quality points per credit.

ESU Athletic Training Graduate Students Earn 100% Pass Rate

On Friday, May 10 six students graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a master's degree in athletic training. All six students successfully achieved 100% first-time pass rate on the Board Certification Athletic Training examination. ESU's athletic training - professional practice program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), has a three-year aggregate "first-time pass rate" of 100%. CAATE requires at least 70% 3-year pass rate.

ESU's Special Ed and Rehab Honorary Donates to LVHN's Nurse-Family Partnership

Students from East Stroudsburg University's Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta honorary for the Special Education and Rehabilitation Department recently donated $1,000 to the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) through the Lehigh Valley Health Network. Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta's mission is to serve people with disabilities in the local community and beyond. NFP works with low income, first-time parents in Monroe County and has offices across the country.

Students, Faculty Take Top Honors at Regional Business Plan Competition

East Stroudsburg University walked away with top honors in both the collegiate and non-collegiate sectors of the tecBRIDGE Business Plan Competition on April 25 at the F.M. Kirby Center in downtown Wilkes-Barre. ESU students Zachary Waldman and Nick Neely, both seniors majoring in computer security from Mechanicsburg, Pa., earned first place in the collegiate sector of the competition with their creation, Falchion Systems. Nicole Chinnici '14, director of The Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute at ESU, won first place in the non-collegiate sector with her creation, Organtick. Winning companies received $10,000 in cash and up to $100,000 of in-kind business support services. Jessica Rosen, a 2011 graduate of ESU from Henryville was a finalist in the non-collegiate competition with her reptile food business, The Laughing Lizard.

NSSLHA Chapter at ESU Awarded 2019 Gold Chapter Honors

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has awarded the NSSLHA Chapter at East Stroudsburg University with 2019 Gold Chapter Honors, recognizing ESU's chapter for the second straight year. The gold award is given to chapters that complete service learning projects, advocate for legislation for the disabled, have social events, and raise funds for charities. This year ESU's NSSLHA chapter's main charity was the Shriner's Club of Boston, which performs cleft palate surgeries for children at no cost to families.

ESU Announces University Leadership and Service Award Winners

Graduating seniors Abigail Soto and Megan Harding have spent their years at East Stroudsburg University with a desire to lead and serve others. Soto, a history and political science major from Mount Pocono, Pa., was awarded the University Leadership Award for the 2018-19 academic year. Megan Harding, a communication and sciences disorder major from West Pittston, Pa., was awarded the University Service Award.

ESU to Graduate 1,187 Students at Three Commencement Exercises

A total of 1,187 students will receive degrees from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania at separate commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students on May 10 and May 11. ESU will hold three graduation ceremonies: one for graduate students on Friday, May 10 at 6:45 p.m. and two ceremonies for undergraduate students on Saturday, May 11. The undergraduate ceremonies will take place at 8:45 a.m. (College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education) and at 1:15 p.m. (College of Business and Management and College of Health Sciences). All three ceremonies will be held in Koehler Fieldhouse. A total of 995 bachelor's degrees, 188 master's degrees and four doctoral degrees will be awarded.

East Stroudsburg University Announces Speakers for 2019 Commencement

East Stroudsburg University will hold its commencement exercises on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 in Koehler Fieldhouse. The graduate commencement ceremony with take place Friday at 7 p.m. Evelyn Farah will be the student commencement speaker. Undergraduate ceremonies will take place on Saturday. The ceremony awarding bachelor's degrees from ESU's College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education will begin at 8:45 a.m. Philip P. Andujar will be the student speaker. The ceremony awarding bachelor's degrees from ESU's college of Business and Management and College of Health Sciences will begin at 1:45 p.m. Darian L. Cruz will be the student speaker. Lieutenant General Susan Lawrence (Ret.) will be the keynote speaker for both undergraduate ceremonies.

Students Present Research to Council of Trustees

Two East Stroudsburg University students, Samantha Dietz and Alicia Kakakio, presented research to the university's Council of Trustees during their April 25 meeting. The two students were chosen by ESU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Joanne Z. Bruno, J.D., from the 175 students that presented research at ESU's annual Student Research and Creative Activity Symposium on April 10.

The cohort of 13 scholars was celebrated at a cording ceremony on April 28, where the students were given red and grey cords and pins to wear on commencement day.

Communication Student Set to Intern with Sirius XM

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania student Zuri Redmond, a sophomore communication major from Paterson, N.J., has earned a part-time internship spot this summer with Sirius XM in New York, N.Y. Redmond will be working specifically with the talk show, Insight - Tell Me Everything with John Fugelsang.
