Psychology Department hosted the 46th Biannual Research Forum

The Psychology Department at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania hosted the 46th Biannual Research Forum on December 3, 2019 in the Niedbala Auditorium of the Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. The research forum was started over 20 years ago by Sussie Eshun, Ph.D., professor of psychology, and Richard Wesp, Ph.D., retired distinguished professor of psychology, as a venue to showcase the outstanding student research being done in the psychology department. It has steadily grown and now includes numerous research and internship posters, student research presentations, student award presentations, and honor society inductions.

Samuel E. Quainoo, Ph.D., professor and chair of political science and economics at East Stroudsburg University and six of his students attended the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Merida, Mexico in September. ESU was the public university in the U.S. that was represented at the conference, which included more than 1,600 attendees from high schools to Ivy League institutions.

Grace Martini, a senior majoring in special education from Monroe Township, New Jersey, spent part of her summer working at Adam's Camp in Colorado with young adults with intellectual disabilities. During her time there, Martini worked with a group of 10 boys, ages 14 to 18, in her cabin, the Timberwolves. The group participated in camp activities while learning social and life skills.

Graduate Students Reflect on Time in Classroom Abroad

For one week in July, three East Stroudsburg University graduate students along with their professor worked in Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, a private k-12 school in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The hands-on experience abroad fulfilled the requirements for a course in comparative education. Rebecca Carbin of Stroudsburg, Pa., Danielle Cloward of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Migdalia Lira of Easton, Pa. were led on the study abroad experience by Beth Rajan Sockman, Ph.D., professor of professional and secondary education and co-department chair. Through a range of new experiences, the students immersed themselves in the Guatemalan culture in order to have the opportunity to reflect on their own culture and education system.

Three New Board Members Named to ESU Foundation

Robert Willever '75, East Stroudsburg University Foundation Board Chair, has announced the appointments of three new members to its Board of Directors. ESU alumni Alfredo Garcia '03 of Bethlehem, Pa., local businessman Stephen Somers of Hackettstown, N.J., and student liaison Emily Jimenez '22, were appointed during the board's quarterly meeting held on May 13, 2019.
